Sowing Instructions
- Sow watermelon seeds directly in the permanent field once the soil has warmed, at a depth of 4–5 cm. Soaking the seeds in water for about 10 hours before sowing is recommended to speed up germination. Sow 7–8 seeds per hill, spacing hills and rows about 130 cm apart. After 4 true leaves appear, thin to the 3 strongest plants per hill. The crop needs well-drained soil and regular irrigation; avoid waterlogging.
Sowing Season
- Temperate regions: during spring.
- Warm regions of Saudi Arabia: from late winter to spring, avoiding severe cold during early growth.
Harvest
- Harvest when fruits are fully developed and have reached the proper size. Ripeness is confirmed when the tendril nearest the fruit dries and the color of the spot touching the ground changes.
Orkida Tip
- For sweet, high-quality watermelons, irrigate regularly, especially during fruit set and fruit development, and reduce irrigation somewhat before harvest. Well-drained soil and full sun exposure improve flesh quality and increase sugar content.
