You sit in the garden at sunset and bites begin, you sleep in a closed room and buzzing wakes you. Mosquitoes are not only a nuisance; they are among the insects most linked to disease transmission worldwide, and a small amount of standing water, like a plant saucer or an old tyre, is enough to complete their life cycle in days. This is why many attempts fail by only spraying flying mosquitoes without reaching the source. In this guide we explain the main types, why some people are bitten more, how to break the life cycle in water, when to use fogging and residual spray, and how to protect your home and farm with an integrated plan.

Insect: A small flying insect that breeds in standing water, and the female feeds on blood to lay her eggs.
Breeding: A small amount of standing water (a saucer under a plant pot or an old tire) is enough for a full life cycle.
Harm: Annoying bites with itching and swelling, and some species may transmit diseases in certain regions.
Peak activity: Increases at sunset, in warm and humid weather, and after rain.
Rule: Drying out places where water collects is the most important step, then control the adults with products suited to the location.

Why Are Mosquitoes Attracted to Humans?

Mosquitoes are attracted to humans by several factors combined, the most important being the carbon dioxide produced by breathing, body heat, the smell of sweat, and certain blood types, so some people may be bitten more than others in the same place. Mosquitoes are mainly active from after sunset until the early hours of the morning, and their density increases after irrigation and rainfall, near ponds and standing water, and in poorly ventilated places.

The Most Widespread Mosquito Types

  1. Anopheles: The main vector of malaria.
  2. Culex: A vector of West Nile virus and some other pathogens.
  3. Aedes: A vector of dengue fever, Zika, and chikungunya.
  4. The degree of danger varies by species and geographic region, but all species are annoying and a health risk.

Signs of Mosquito Presence

  1. Clear flying activity in the evening and at night
  2. Repeated bites with itching and redness
  3. An annoying buzzing sound during sleep
  4. Moving larvae in standing water
  5. In some cases adult mosquitoes are not noticed, while the real infestation is hidden as larvae in the water

Mosquito Life Cycle

  1. Eggs on the water surface
  2. A larva in the water that feeds on organic matter
  3. A pupa in the water
  4. A full-grown insect that flies, bites, and breeds
  5. The cycle completes within 7–14 days in summer, which explains the rapid and sudden rise in mosquito numbers.

Mosquito Damage

  1. Transmission of serious viral and bacterial diseases such as dengue, malaria, and West Nile virus
  2. Skin inflammation and severe allergies
  3. Persistent sleeplessness and sleep disturbance
  4. Weak animal production because of repeated stress

Integrated Control Program: First, Preventive Control

  1. Remove all sources of standing water such as containers, tires, and basins
  2. Seal water tanks tightly
  3. Improve drainage and change the water of ornamental ponds regularly
  4. Use mosquito nets while sleeping

Second: Controlling Larvae in Water (Larvicides)

This is the most important stage for preventing mosquitoes from appearing in the first place, because it cuts the life cycle before flying mosquitoes emerge.

Suitable Active Ingredients:

  1. Temephos: For ponds, drainage basins, and non-potable tanks
  2. Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (BTI): A safe biological option for drinking water and ornamental ponds, with no effect on humans, animals, or fish
  3. Diflubenzuron: A growth regulator that prevents the larva from turning into an adult mosquito
  4. Repetition: According to the interval written on the label and the density of larvae Important: Do not use fogging insecticides in water

Third: Controlling Adult Mosquitoes by Fogging (ULV)

Used when the number of flying mosquitoes rises in outdoor areas.

Suitable Active Ingredients:

  1. Deltamethrin
  2. Lambda-cyhalothrin
  3. Cypermethrin
  4. Permethrin (for fogging) Suitable for camps, rest houses, gardens, and open sites
  5. Repetition: according to the interval written on the label and the severity of infestation. Best time: sunset or dawn

Fourth: Residual Surface Spraying

Used for walls, shaded places, and mosquito resting areas.

Suitable Active Ingredients:

  1. Deltamethrin
  2. Lambda-cyhalothrin
  3. Cypermethrin
  4. Alpha-cypermethrin A residual effect that lasts several days depending on the type of surface and the environment

When Do We Use Each Method?

  1. Is there standing water? Start with larvicides immediately
  2. Are there dense flying mosquitoes? Use ULV fogging
  3. Are there resting places? Use residual spraying
  4. The best result is achieved by combining all three steps together

Common Mistakes

  1. Relying only on mosquito fogging without treating the water
  2. Leaving open water containers
  3. Spraying at midday
  4. Not repeating treatment during the season
  5. Repeating control without changing the water source gives only temporary results

Health Warning

Neglecting mosquito control may lead to the transmission of epidemic diseases, increased skin allergies, weak animal production, and many complaints from residents. Control must be continuous and preventive, not a temporary intervention.

A Plan to Protect Your Home and Garden

Start with a weekly inspection of everything that can hold water: plant saucers, gutters, discarded containers and uncovered tanks. Empty them or scrub them to remove eggs stuck to the walls. Then fit window screens, keep doors closed at sunset and use fans because mosquitoes are weak fliers. In large gardens combine larvicide treatment of standing water with fogging in open areas at sunset.

When to Revisit the Plan

If mosquitoes return days after fogging, the source was not treated, so look for standing water outside your property or at neighbors. Follow up for two weeks after treatment, and visit one of our branches with a photo or description of the place and we will guide you to the right product.

Mosquito Control Products Available at Orkida

  1. K-Othrine Polyzone by Envu (formerly Bayer): A public health insecticide for mosquito control, 1 liter pack.
  2. Starycide SC 480 by Envu: A growth regulator for controlling mosquito and fly larvae in their breeding places, 1 liter pack.
  3. VectoBac DT by Valent BioSciences: Biological tablets for controlling mosquito larvae in standing water.
  4. Demon Max by Syngenta: An insecticide that controls a large number of pests, 500 ml pack.

You can find all the options in the Mosquito Insecticides category. The most important step is eliminating the larvae in standing water before they turn into flying mosquitoes.

Orkida’s Advice

Always start by breaking the mosquito life cycle in the water first, then support that with fogging and residual spraying. Relying on a single step only brings the problem back within a few days.

Frequently Asked Questions About Mosquitoes

Where do mosquitoes breed?

In any standing water, even a small amount, such as plant pot saucers, neglected containers, gutters, and uncovered water tanks.

How do I reduce mosquitoes inside the house?

Screen the windows, empty standing water weekly, use mosquito nets and fans, and you can use an insecticide suitable for enclosed spaces.

When is outdoor spraying useful?

When numbers build up in gardens or around bodies of water, provided the breeding source is treated as well, otherwise the numbers return quickly.

Does spraying affect children and pets?

It can be harmful if used incorrectly, so follow the package instructions and keep children and animals away until the place dries and is ventilated.
