Brown-Banded Cockroach: Why You Find It in the Living Room, Not the Kitchen

You find a small cockroach behind a picture frame in the living room, inside the wardrobe, or even on a ceiling fan. You assume it is a German cockroach that lost its way from the kitchen, yet you find no trace of it in the kitchen at all. This is the moment to stop: it is most likely the brown-banded cockroach (Supella longipalpa), a species that does not need nearby water and does not stay in the kitchen.

This very trait is what makes it confusing. Anyone who treats only the kitchen never reaches it. In this article we get to know its appearance, its real hiding places and how to actually reach it.

Appearance: A small, light brown cockroach with two yellow bands across its back, smaller than both the German and the American cockroach.
Habitat: It prefers high, dry places such as the tops of cupboards and behind pictures and electrical appliances in the living room and bedrooms.
Difference: It does not depend on the kitchen and its moisture like the others, so its location is misjudged and treatment fails.
Life cycle: It glues its egg cases to high surfaces and furniture, not in damp cracks.
Rule: Place sticky traps and gel in the high places it frequents, and inspect furniture and electronics before any spraying.

How Do You Identify It?

Many people confuse it with the German cockroach because the two are close in size, but there are distinguishing marks that settle the matter in seconds.

  • Size: about 13 to 14.5 mm, roughly half an inch.
  • The two bands: it is named for the two light, yellowish-brown bands across the nymph's body and the adult's wings.
  • Color: medium to reddish brown, with a dark bell-shaped mark on the thorax, unlike the two lengthwise stripes of the German cockroach.
  • Male and female: the male is slimmer and its wings cover the whole abdomen, while the female is broader and darker and her wings do not fully cover the abdomen.
  • Flight: the male flies in warm weather and may dart toward a lamp, while the female does not fly.

If it has two parallel dark lines behind the head, it is a German cockroach, and you will find the details in the article on German cockroaches.

Why It Differs From the Others: A High Hideout and a Dry Place

Most cockroaches love moisture and gather near water. The brown-banded cockroach, however, tolerates warmer and drier environments, which is why it spreads through the house instead of gathering in one spot.

  • High places: it likes upper shelves, the area under the ceiling, the tops of cupboards, and behind picture frames and woodwork.
  • Warm appliances: inside TVs, radios, microwaves, computers and clocks, because warmth speeds up its growth.
  • Living rooms and bedrooms: it appears less in the kitchen than the German cockroach does, which surprises the household.
  • Furniture and curtains: inside cabinets, between blankets and behind wall pictures.
  • Less crowded: it does not gather in large clusters like the German cockroach, so the size of the infestation is hard to estimate.

Although it does not need much water, it does need a little food, so you find it near sofa crumbs or leftovers near a child's bed.

Its Life Cycle

Knowing the life cycle explains why cockroaches keep appearing even after the adults are gone. The eggs are the hidden link.

  • Egg case: small, light brown and about a quarter inch long, holding about 14 to 18 eggs. The female carries it for about a day, then glues it in a hidden spot.
  • Where they are glued: under shelves and furniture, in the folds of upholstery, behind curtains and on the ceiling.
  • Number of cases: a female produces about 14 cases in her lifetime, which is more than 200 eggs.
  • Hatching: takes about a month depending on temperature, and the cycle from egg to adult takes about 160 days on average.
  • Lifespan: an adult lives about six months, and sometimes a little longer.

Because the cases are glued in places far from the floor, the cleaner never passes over them and no one notices them. You will find the shape of the cases and ways to destroy them in the article on cockroach eggs.

How Do You Know It Is in Your Home?

Because it does not cluster, it appears in small, scattered numbers and you assume it is a passing visitor. Confirming it takes organized monitoring.

  1. Place sticky traps in the living room and bedroom at different heights, not only on the floor but on top of cupboards and near appliances.
  2. Leave them for a week, then read the count and the growth stages: the presence of small nymphs means breeding.
  3. Check behind frames, under shelves and in side cracks with a flashlight.
  4. Look for small egg cases and dark specks of droppings near appliances.

You will find a description of the general signs in signs of a cockroach infestation.

How Do We Control It? Bait Instead of Spray

The hardest thing about it is that it hides in places where we do not expect cockroaches, and spraying the kitchen floor does not reach it. The solution is gel bait, because it is placed in every hiding place and works from the inside.

  • Gel first: place small, separate dots in cracks, behind appliances, on top of cupboards and in shelf corners, not lines and not on open surfaces.
  • Cleaning: sweep up crumbs, wash sofa covers, check drawers and remove cartons.
  • Monitoring: keep the sticky traps in place and check them weekly to confirm the result.
  • Sealing hideouts: once the infestation is over, close the openings behind frames and between panels with a flexible sealant.
  • Spraying: we do not recommend it in bedrooms or near electronics, because the insecticide does not reach the eggs and the devices are affected.

Products We Recommend for the Brown-Banded Cockroach

At Orkida Agri we rely on gel in living rooms and bedrooms for this species, because it is odorless and requires no spraying on fabrics or near appliances. We start with one active ingredient and rotate when needed:

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the brown-banded cockroach more dangerous than the German one?

Not more dangerous, but harder to detect because it hides away from the kitchen. It contaminates surfaces and food and causes allergies like the others.

Why do I find it in the bedroom?

Because it prefers warm, dry, high places, and bedrooms, their cupboards and the space behind appliances suit it better than a wet kitchen.

Does it fly?

The male can fly short distances, especially in warm weather, and the female does not fly.

Is it enough to keep food away from it?

Keeping food away makes it less attractive, but it needs only a little food, so cleanliness alone does not end an infestation. We need gel bait to reach every hiding place.

Is spraying the cupboard with insecticide a good solution?

We do not recommend it. Spraying inside cupboards and on clothes is not appropriate, and gel placed in shelf corners is more effective and cleaner.

How long does it take to get rid of it?

Usually two weeks to two months depending on the size of the infestation, because the eggs hatch in batches and need follow-up with traps.
